Ugh, a second instance of a blue screen error with Windows 7 involving Symantec Endpoint Protection. The error is a page fault in a non-paged area, and the file is SRTSPL64.sys. So the gist of it is that I need to reinstall SEP, but can’t keep the computer running to do it. The laptop stays on in Safe mode, but the installer is not loaded. Found steps to deal with this here. The gist of it is:
- Start win 7 in safe mode (using F8)
- run msconfig.exe (type it in in the Start menu search box)
- Click on General tab, select Diagnostic Startup and choose to Restart
- Restart (not into safe mode) and again run msconfig.exe
- Click on Services tab, check Windows Installer and click on Apply
- Choose to continue without restarting
- Go to Control Panel, add/remove programs and uninstall Symantec
- Reboot PC again, go into msconfig.exe
- In the General tab select Normal Startup and again reboot your computer
- Now reinstall SEP, or whatever
Discovered another important tidbit here. In order to change back to a normal setup, msconfig must be run as an elevated administrator. I enabled the default administrator account, signed in as administrator and ran it that way. Sevenforums.com has these instructions to enable the default administrator account:
- Start the Local Users and Groups Manager (lusrmgr.msc) by typing lusrmgr in the Start menu search box
- Double click on Users
- Right click on Administrator and select Properties
- Uncheck the box to disable the Administrator account
