UCService error on shutdown

Was kinda able to find this reference when I Googled this memory error:

You may get an error each time you shut down your computer:  UCService: UCService.exe – Application Error : The instruction at “0x6a624f61” referenced memory at “0x6a624f61”. The memory could not be “read”.
I could only read part of the solution (via Google’s cached text only version).  Fortunately that part had the info I needed.
Launch services.msc from Start> Run, and you will want to change the SMART Display Controller from automatic to manual by right clicking and going to Properties> General> Start Up type.
Just had to go into services and switch the start up type for SMART Display Controller from ‘automatic’ to ‘manual’.  Hopefully, all the SMART stuff will keep on working as it should.  Haven’t heard otherwise yet anyhow.  It’s been a few weeks since I did this on the first laptop.  I don’t know if that teacher uses the response system or not, but she does use her SMART Board a lot.

So, thanks to whatever school district that posted that on their help site.

Do you need to restart before the fix happens?

This usually works for me, but this time it’s not. I still get the error on shutdown. Any suggestions?

Not offhand. I would think that whatever uses the service is starting it up manually, and then it gives the error. I’m guessing that the Smart Display Controller, whatever that is, isn’t always needed. So if is not automatically started by the system, then there is no error at shutdown. I haven’t been able to find any info about what, exactly, uses the service, or when it might start up. It might be worth a call to SmartTech support to see if they have any suggestions. It seems to be a common enough issue that they should be familiar with it. I might give that a try one of these days if I find myself with nothing better to do. Let me know if you find any more info on it!

This error came up in a classroom I support, so I did some more digging. Since your site came up near the top of the google results, I figured I’d add my learning here:

It looks like the Smart Display Controller Service in fact does exactly what it says: It enables the software to control a display device (monitor or projector) over a serial cable. (info from: http://smarttech.com/us/Support/Browse+Support/Support+Documents/KB1/077594.aspx )

I assume then that this service will only matter in specialized applications where the computer itself remotely turns on or off a projector (you know, in case somebody hasn’t heard of a remote control). Since serial cables and COM ports are generally archaic at this point, I’d feel it’s a safe assumption that there’s no danger in turning off this service in most cases.

What if there is not a Smart Display Controller service. I see there is SMART board software installed but not service listed under services.msc or in msconfig

Yes, thank you for this post, It solved the error for us as well. FYI, this error occurs for us after running the SMART Product Update. Oh the irony.

That fixed it for now. Thank you!
Updating to Version 11 of SmartNotebook also took care of it on another system.
